23 arrested over the weekend
23 DUI arrests in a single weekend! I think it is time that this sort of problem is solved at the root. I found the following article at: the News Examiner:
Officers in Sumner County made 23 alcohol-related arrests Aug. 11-13. Ten people were charged with driving under the influence, court records show.
Gallatin Police Department issued 10 alcohol-related tickets, which accounted for nearly half of the tickets that will be processed by Sumner County General Sessions Court.
From Friday to Sunday, Hendersonville police issued six tickets; Portland police arrested four, while other departments in the county accounted for three citations.
Authorities issued 10 D.U.I.s, six implied consent citations, six public intoxications and one other alcohol-related ticket.
Officers issue “implied consent” violations, after suspected drunk drivers refuse sobriety testing, which is illegal in Tennessee.
Larry Christian, 31, of Portland, added a fourth D.U.I. charge to his wrap sheet. Officers also charged him with driving on a revoked license and simple possession of marijuana.
After searching the vehicle, authorities found marijuana, reports stated.
A Sumner County Sheriff’s deputy observed Christian, also a fugitive from Illinois, swerving across traffic lines at 52 mph, in a 40 mph zone, which prompted the traffic stop.
Christian was transported to Sumner County Jail, where he was held on bonds totaling $6,000.
The deputy pursued Christian, who allegedly ignored the flashing lights and blaring sirens until he arrived at his Portland home, according to the officer’s report.
Christian was slow to respond and unsteady on his feet, the officer stated.
He failed three field-sobriety tests, he added.
Police charged Michael Miles, 31, of Portland, with his third D.U.I. this past weekend.
He was transported to Sumner County Jail, where he was held on $5,000 bail. Miles will stand trial in Sumner County General Sessions Court 9 a.m. Aug. 22.
Portland officers observed Miles doing 80 mph in a 55 mph zone, which caused them to perform a traffic stop.
Police followed Miles to his home. He was able to enter his home before officers arrived. Officers proceeded to the home to ask him questions, according to the report.
Miles claimed he wasn’t driving the vehicle they followed, reports show.
Miles’ criminal history also shows charges related to possession of marijuana, open container, public intoxication and several driving on revoked license.
